Ranger

From OberinWiki

Of the three fighting classes of Oberin, two others are the Fighter and the Rogue. This page concerns the Ranger.

The Ranger can and will wield Melee weapons, however, not with the same bonuses that the Fighter has. Where the Ranger benefits is from using Melee weapons in combination with Tracking. Tracking allows the Ranger to sense beasts and humanoid foes without coming so close as to attract their attention. The Ranger should approach a group carefully, attract the attention of one creature, then lure it away before finishing it with the sword.

Where the Ranger most excels is ranged combat, Archery. That Hell Hound might be too strong to fight in melee, but the Ranger can shoot it with Arrows and evade its attacks. But often one of two situations prevents the Ranger from success. First, the Ranger might exhaust the supply of Arrows. Second, it is typical during these fights for the Ranger to flee from the foe while shooting arrows, then to chase the foe while shooting arrows. After the foe approaches death and decides to flee from the Ranger, the Ranger pursues aggressively, intending to finish the battle and to recover some of the Arrows. But to often, the opponent will escape, or even worse flee into a large group of foes who then overpower the Ranger. For these two reasons, Archery sometimes frustrates Rangers, especially those who have Woodcrafting below level 5 and cannot easily make Arrows.
